THE PROBLEM
A sovereign island nation was launching a digital benefits wallet, but the initiative required more than a functional app—it needed a brand that citizens could immediately trust and claim as their own.
For 35K citizens living across 24 atolls, where physical currency can be scarce, financial tools need to feel practical, accessible, and trustworthy.
The challenge was to establish a standalone brand and supporting communications that were culturally grounded and intuitive.
THE SOLUTION
Lomalo—meaning “blue ocean” or “open water”—became the conceptual anchor, representing flow, connection and movement across the islands.
I led the development of a culturally rooted brand system that prioritized clarity and trust, while honoring Marshallese as navigators.
The wordmark evokes water currents and cash flow between atolls, while secondary visuals draw from Marshallese stick charts—historic navigation tools that map ocean swells and pathways. Elements that visually reinforce connection.
IMPACT
The brand enabled clear communication around benefits distribution and day-to-day use, supporting confidence (and excitement) at launch.
As one project partner noted, the result was “a distinct brand that feels culturally grounded”—one that Marshallese citizens recognized as their own.
